Eleuthera is the Greek word for "Freedom". A long slender island approximately 110 miles long and 2 miles wide. The unusually long and thin shape of the Island makes for much shoreline, and an easy transition if you choose to move to the other side of the Island on a windy day. A beautiful island of unspoiled pink and white sand beaches, turquoise waters and green rolling hills, which give this Family Island a scenic advantage.
Quaint small settlements line the Island from North to South with the most genuinely warm and friendly locals that enjoy making you feel right at home on their Island.
If you love the beach and enjoy water this is the perfect island for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, diving and shelling. Eleuthera boasts many of the best bonefishing flats in the Bahamas for fishing enthusiasts.
If adventure and exploring top your list while vacationing, Eleuthera offers an abundance

About

Settlements and interesting landmarks North of Island Time cottage:

Hatchet Bay/Alice Town ~ Hatchet Bay Caves explore an underground cavern.

Gregory Town ~ Surfers Beach Manor for Floyds fresh fish of the day and while there check out the waves at Surfers Beach. Elvina's on Tuesday and Friday Nights for live entertainment. Island Made gift shop is a great spot for gifts.
The Cove is a beautiful property to enjoy lunch or have a romantic dinner. The Glass Window Bridge is one of the most popular attractions on the Island, the narrowest point of land where the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean meet the deep azure blue waters of the Atlantic.

Current ~ A sleepy and historic settlement, but one with no Restaurants. So, pack a picnic lunch and enjoy one of the many beach areas. If an avid diver, they say no visit would be complete until visiting the Current cut, where tide changes cause a large amount of water to flow through a narrow passage at very swift speeds.

Spanish Wells ~ The fishing capital of the Bahamas. A very well kept and prosperous Island with a marina, a few restaurants and several gift shops. A fun afternoon trip accessed by water taxi from Eleuthera's mainland at James Bay.

Harbour Island ~ Known for its miles of long pink sand beaches, homes of the rich and famous, upscale restaurants and gift shops. This is a great Island to tour by golf cart for the day, if you are in the mood to play tourist. Harbour Island is accessible by water taxi from the dock located at the end of North Eleuthera's Airport Road.

Settlements and interesting landmarks South of Island Time cottage:

James Cistern ~A small settlement just South of Island Time, that has more Churches than stores. Big Rock General Store is within a few miles, the closest to Island Time cottage. They usually have the Quick Cell prepaid phone cards required for the house phone. Billy Stubbs serves BBQ food from the front of his very own lawn, Friday and Saturdays from 11:00 AM-till it is all gone (which is usually early afternoon). The best on the Island.....So, get there early. Kel-D's         Restaurant is in the center of town and serves traditional cuisine. They have a fish fry on Saturday afternoons till early evening. Continuing South on the Queens Highway, East and Final is another Mom and Pop's variety store selling food and household items.

Governor's Harbour ~ The largest Settlement and Capital of Eleuthera with a population of about 750. There are a number of restaurants in and around Governor's Harbour from casual to upper scale, many serving traditional Bahamian dishes. The Friday night fish fry opposite Haynes Library near Cupids Cay is a tradition not to be missed,  try a "Rum Bubba" while listening  to Island music. Here there are two grocery stores, liquor stores, and several gift shops to browse through while in town.

Savannah Sound ~A tiny Settlement South of Governor's Harbour. You would probably miss, if it weren't for the sign.  One of the Islands best bone fishing flats is found here, on the Atlantic side. I have personally never seen another fisherman in the area, while there catching.

Tarpum Bay ~A beautiful fishing village on the Caribbean side of the Island. A wonderful location to buy the "catch of the day" from local fishermen, brought in most afternoons. Whether it be Grouper, Conch, or Lobster (if in season). you know it is fresh. There is generally someone making Conch salad on the weekend afternoons and we are told it is not to be missed.

Rocksound ~ The home of the Ocean Hole. A large inland saltwater lake connected by tunnels to the ocean. Bring some bread and feed the fish that emerge from the depths below. It is estimated to be 600 feet deep, but no one actually seems to know. It is always a fun and interesting question to ask, and see what kind of response you receive. Local children always have the best answers on this subject.

Bannerman Town ~ A very small settlement on the Southern end of the Island. This is where you will find Lighthouse Beach one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches ever encountered in our travels, personally speaking. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is definately recommended for this bumpy and rough venture, it is not an easy find so, be patient. Make sure to pack a cooler for the day with plenty of water, lunch and not to forget Kalik. You are sure to have something to cheer about if you find this hidden treasure.
